Every year my Mom asks me for a Christmas list and in recent years I have been unmotivated to make one. As I’ve grown older and can now support myself, I just don’t find that I am very into getting gifts. I have anything I need and find much more joy in experiences trips, museums, sporting events, concerts, things that aren’t felt but remembered. This year though, really just to help out my Mom as she places presents under the tree for Whitney and Travis, I have decided to make a list. 🙂 WIth the help of some amazing artisans and companies I have found a list of gifts that give back, the very best kind!
A Cozy Blanket– Sackcloth & Ashes
What kind of company are you?
We are a company that sells high-quality blankets in the United States. With every blanket you purchase, we will give a blanket to your local homeless shelter.
I love Sackcloth & Ashes, not just because of their amazing product but because of the idea behind the name. “In ancient jewish culture, sackcloth and ashes were used as a symbol of mourning and repentance. Every time you wrap yourself in a Sackcloth & Ashes blanket it symbolizes mourning over the homeless population and repentance by contributing to a homeless shelter in your area.” Buying one of their products is a win for everyone.
An Easy to Wear Tote- FEED Projects
I am a huge fan of Lauren Bush Lauren and after running into her multiple times in NYC my fangirl status rose. Lauren founded FEED in 2007 with the mission of “Creating Good Products That Help FEED the World.” In addition to the company, FEED started a non-profit organization called the FEED Foundation, which is dedicated to supporting programs and organizations that are effectively working to fight hunger and eliminate malnutrition throughout the world. Lauren is also a PR genius, highlighting her relationships with different philanthropists, bloggers and celebrities, it seems everyone is rooting for her.
New Glasses– Warby Parker
Warby Parker was founded with a rebellious spirit and a lofty objective: to offer designer eyewear at a revolutionary price, while leading the way for socially conscious businesses. It’s amazing to me that pretty much anyone can look good in their glasses-like really good! Buy a pair, Give a pair!
The Perfect Trench- Preserve
“America is full of tales waiting to be told. There are beautiful stories hiding in small towns and big cities, on suburban streets and rural roads. Great wisdom lives in the well-worked hands of aging craftspeople and in the eager words of young artisans. Our very history is whispered into the materials they use to make exquisite goods according to timeless standards of quality and care. That is the tradition we aim to preserve.” While I was sceptical of Blake Lively’s new venture (like many, including Martha Stuart) I have been pleasantly surprised. While some items are extremely pricey there are more affordable items as well.
Jewelry with Purpose- The Giving Keys
It started with a New York hotel room key. The Giving Keys founder, actress and singer/songwriter, Caitlin Crosby, wore the key as a necklace and had the idea to start engraving old, used keys with inspirational words. Realizing that in a way we are all like these keys – unique, flawed, scarred, and at risk of being discarded – she wanted these keys to have their purpose renewed over and over again. Their message is yours for a time, but once they’ve served their purpose with you, pay it forward to inspire another.
Perfect Tops-Good HYOUman
I first learned of Brett Novek’s Good HYOUman campaign through Tracy Anderson, an advocate and friend of Brett’s. I have many of his designs and can’t tell you how much I love them. Each shirt has a positive message with the softest fabric in the world. Great for a workout or sleepover these Tees are my go to.
Think consciously this Christmas about your gifts and be thankful for more than what you see under the tree!
