This past weekend we did the cross country trek to visit Luke’s alma mater, Brown University. It was well worth the trip. We went so I could have a peek into Luke’s college experience and see his former team in action at the Brown vs. Harvard game. Before meeting and then marrying Luke, my only connection to Brown was that Blake Lively’s character played soccer there in ‘The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants’ Franchise and Emma Watson was an alum (one of Luke’s classmates I might add). I’m glad I’ve gained some perspective and was able to see the university through Luke’s eyes. 😉
Going to Brown was an easy choice for Luke once he knew he got in and would continue playing football but it didn’t make the Texas to Rhode Island transition any easier. This trip gave me a greater understanding of how hard he worked, how strong he was in the face of adversity and how loving he is to all people, including those who are very different than him.
I loved being in Providence with my mother and father-in-law. It was so fun to hear their perspective on the whole experience. Sending their first child to college, not only out of state but almost as far as he could be from Friendswood, Texas. Luke’s freshman year he lived on the corner of Hope Street and Power Street. He held onto those words as promises that he was in the right place. I just love that little detail of his first year at Brown.
The weather was absolutely perfect! Our morning walks through campus and down Thayer Street were crisp and cool. The leaves are just now beginning to change and the sun shined on us the whole weekend.
We made sure to eat at some of Luke’s favorite restaurants. If you’re in Providence we highly suggest: Andreas for delicious greek food and people watching on Thayer Street, Meeting Street Cafe for a fresh omelette, Al Forno Restaurant for margherita pizza, and Modern Diner for a classic American breakfast inside an old school diner.
I’m so thankful for this past weekend and the time Luke had at Brown. I could not be more proud of all he has accomplished and all that is to come for him in his legal career and our marriage.
I look forward to having other friends and family join us for Brown trips in the future. Get ready for some fun!
